By now, you've probably hear that wooden pallets are a cheap and easy way to decorate at home. One of our favorite DIY projects to create with pallets are headboards! You can get for under $5 at theReStore, and there are hundreds of different ways to decorate them. If you have paint, wood stain, chalkboard paint, stencils, stickers, string lights, fabric or sconces, you can personalize your headboard on the cheap.
FINDING A PALLET
When shopping for your headboard, you must make sure to get a heat treated (HT) pallet rather than one that has been treated with Methyl Bromide (MB). Treated with chemicals, MB pallets are not safe to use in your home, so make sure that your pallet has an HT printed somewhere on it. It helps to look for the International Plant Prevention Convention (IPPC) logo as well. This is a sign that extra measures were taken to ensure that no chemicals were used to treat the pallet.
Look for these logos when buying a pallet.
HANGING YOUR PALLET
Cleat hanging, wire hanging and hardware hanging.
Once you have decorated your pallet and are ready to hang it, you'll need to pick up a few supplies. You have a few options for how to hang your headboard, but must first decide which direction you want the slats on the pallet to run. Once you have that in mind, you can decide between using a cleat or screwing in hardware on the edges. You can get either of these at any local hardware store (see pictures below). Some people even choose to hang their headboards by a thick wire.
Now that you have decorated and hung your pallet, it's time to move your bed back in front of it. Enjoy your lovely headboard and check back with our blog for other great DIYs!
